What is BIS CRS
According to Scheme II of Schedule II of the BIS Regulation Act 2016, the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) is a component of conformity assessment. This scheme was established in 2012. The CRS scheme is a self-declaration scheme, and this certification scheme DOES NOT REQUIRE periodical factory audits.
Under BIS Scheme-II, BIS-CRS is a required certification, and a total of 77 items have been notified by 4 separate Ministries, including MEITY (Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology) , MCF (Ministry of Chemical and Fertilizers), and MNRE (Ministry of New and Renewable Energy).
Who needs to obtain BIS CRS
Importers/ Exporters, Manufacturers, Distributors, Traders and Brand owners need to comply with BIS safety standards for launching a product in India to ensure consumer safety. A unique 8-digit R number is provided for the certified Electronic or IT product for a valid period, eligible for a renewal.

Know Your BIS & Its Implications
There may be various stages of a product where compliance to the safety standards of BIS is mandatory.
Grant of BIS Registration : 8-digit R number; a combination of Factory Name+Address+Brand+Product, is allocated to a new applicant who wishes to sell a product in Indian market.
Inclusion: Applicable for any addition of Models of Same Product, Brand under same registration number.
Renewal : Every 2 Years applicable for each R number
CCL Update : Any addition or alteration in the information provided for 1st time Grant of BIS.
Brand / Model Addition : New brands / models can be added to existing report limited to number of models per report depending upon the product specific guidelines
Model & R Number Withdrawl : Applicable upon discontinuation of model or End of Life of the product
BIS Profile Update : This is required in case of any change in Factory name, Address, Contact details, AIR details, Management details
